The Paradox of Windows Tablets

There's no nice way to say this, so I'll just say it. Windows 8.1 on tablets shouldn't work. On paper, there's just nothing that indicates that this kind of device should be anything but a terribly compromised mess. For the most part, this is a completely true statement, and I really can't recommend one. So why am I writing this, you might ask? Simple; I decided to get one.

I've used a lot of different mobile devices over the years. My first, coincidentally, was a Windows Mobile 6 device. It was an HTC Touch Pro. It wasn't a great device, if I'm completely honest, but most of that came down to Windows Mobile 6. It was never really meant to be a smartphone platform. It was meant to run on mobile computers with integrated barcode scanners. It also required a stylus.

"Next Gen" Consoles

Holy crap, it's been a long time since I posted anything here. Partly I've always felt this was for longer rants, and most of what I've been ranting about lately counts up to only a few hundred words (that and I doubt anyone actually reads this blog, other than spammers). I usually post those on Google+. There hasn't been much of anything worthy of a long rant until now. As you can see by the headline, it's about this whole next gen console thing. Which I could care less about, really. Yes, I consider myself a member of that glorious master race that are PC gamers.

RIP: Northgate OmniKey

Manufactured in 1991.
Today I lay to rest one of the great computing legends, the OmniKey keyboard. In a time when computer hardware was made to last and most software had to be written by hand, a $150 keyboard didn't seem that crazy. Though many never had the opportunity to enjoy the tactile feel of your mechanical switches and nigh unbreakable construction, those of us that did will miss you forever. Rest in peace.
